Majority Statement On "Your Party" (19 Sep '25)

The recent disagreements within the leadership of ‘Your Party’ are frustrating to all of us who want to build a better society. However, the potential split at the top of the nascent party does not reflect the reality for tens of thousands of activists on the ground.
In May 2024, Jamie Driscoll stood for election as North East Mayor. The grassroots campaign secured 126,652 votes, more than the Tories, Reform and Lib Dems put together. It was the second-highest number of votes for an independent candidate in British political history. This was two months before the general election.
Out of that campaign, we ran a series of public meetings, and Majority was born. Within four months, we had established a membership system, a constitution, a political values statement, a code of conduct, and a leadership team, all of which were discussed and ratified at our inaugural conference. We are pluralist, decentralised by design, and support members to become activists, and activists to become leaders.
Racism is on the march across Britain, and we are taking action by mobilising on the streets to defend migrants. We are conducting candidate training courses, hosting reading groups and film clubs, engaging in electoral campaigns, and building a progressive alliance capable of making gains in upcoming local elections and taking control of Newcastle City Council in 2026.
Our communities are suffering now. We don’t have time to mess around. We will continue to support and encourage any truly democratic national left party, but we’re not waiting for permission to build a progressive movement in the North East and beyond.
Something has been awakened, we need leadership not just leaders. Here in the North East Majority members are leading the way.
