KIM - Keep the £2 BUS FARE cap

We are appalled that Labour have decided to raise bus fares by 50% - punishing those on lower incomes and disincentivising public transport use. We call upon our recently elected North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness, to "Keep the £2 Bus Fare Cap".

Referring to her plans for regional public transport, Kim McGuiness stated in her mayoral manifesto that "Our 'Angel Network' will rival that of London or Greater Manchester". She also said, "I'll work with our councils to support and maximise existing routes, making the economic case for subsidising key services now rather than waiting until they disappear"

The Mayors of Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region and West Yorkshire - have all committed to funding the £2 bus fare cap well beyond December 2024. The people of the North East deserve the same support.

If Kim McGuinness is going to honour her manifesto pledge to build a public transport system to rival Greater Manchester and make the economic case for subsidising key services, she must act now and "Keep the £2 Bus Fare Cap".
